Amber heat warning raises wildfire risk across Kent

Kent Fire and Rescue Service has warned that severe wildfire conditions are forecast across parts of Kent as the Met Office issues an Amber Extreme Heat warning, with temperatures expected to reach around 37°C in places.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service posted the warning on social media, advising that any fire starting in the current conditions could spread rapidly. The service urged anyone who sees a fire to move to a place of safety and call 999, asking for the fire service.

The Met Office’s Amber Extreme Heat warning covers parts of London and South East England, including Kent. Temperatures could peak at around 37°C in places, with 38°C possible in some locations during the wider heat episode.

The Met Office has advised that the warning carries an increased likelihood of severe impacts, which may include travel delays, road and rail disruption, power cuts, and risk to life and property.

Wildfire risk is elevated in very hot, dry, sunny conditions because vegetation dries out and fires can spread more quickly. Open areas including grassland, heathland, roadside verges and parks are among the environments at higher risk during the warning period.
